SONG
Sunday. January 2, 2005.  Singing two songs and playing the piano at the
Unitarian Fellowship in Laguna Beach California.  Also handed out a drawing
with text.  See:
War.  p.s.  Yeah, yeah! I know.  The singing is somewhat
different from the printed lyrics.  The lyrics are a revision.
WHY ISN’T THERE A JOB FOR ME.

Land of the brave          (cho.)
Home of the free,  (2)
I fought in Iraq, so
Why isn’t there,
A job for a war hero like me!

I killed men, women and children,
And my insurance isn’t paid,
That may be the biggest mistake,
I ever made!
Why isn’t there, a job for me?

I fought in the war,
Killed the so-called enemy,
Now I’ve got to pay,
For my apartment key,
Why isn’t there, a job for me?

Protecting liberty and freedom
Is important I agree,
But killing all those people,
Does not seem right to me.
Why isn’t there, a job for me?

Corporations  are taking our jobs,
Send them to factories overseas,
They will not employ Americans,
Even when the unions ask them please,
Is that the reason, there is no job for me?

The bank took my house
The landlord took my key,
A big tow truck
Just hauled away my S.U.V.
Why isn’t there, a job for me?

In World War Two
It was a real disgrace
The black soldiers tried to get jobs
And those white racist Christians
Slammed the door right in their face.
Why isn’t there, a job for me?

Twelve years in public school,
Four years at the university,
I studied American history
And plane geometry.
So  why isn’t there, a job for me?

I guarded the prisoners at Abu Graib
And when they would not talk,
I cut off their feet,
So they could not walk.
Why isn’t there, a job for me?

Our government made a deal,
With the Saudi family,
They sell us cheap oil
And we help keep their people in poverty.
Why isn’t there, a job for me?

I killed men, women and children
To set Iraq free,
Tried to make them safe
For Capitalism and Christianity.
Why isn’t there, a job for me?

We blew up a mosque,
But I didn’t care,
We’ll just have to build
A Christian Church right there.
Why isn’t there, a job for  me?

Once they have elections
Then we can go away,
Then the rich will exploit the poor,
Just like here in the U.S.A.
Why isn’t there, a job for  me?

The rich will rule Iraq,
And the poor will be  neglected,
Iraq will buy U.S. weapons,
As the taxes are collected.
Why isn’t there a job for me?

Land of the brave          (cho.)
Home of the free,  (2)
I fought in Iraq, so
Why isn’t there,
A job for a war hero like me!

After the killing stops.”

I JUST WANT TO FIGHT FOR FREEDOM

I don't want to fight to take your land,
Or for political ideas I don't understand,
I don't want to shoot a gun,
Or kill human beings just for fun,
I just want to fight for freedom

I don't want to protect a flag,
Using a bayonet is just a drag,
I don't want to kill lots of people,
Or drop A-bombs on old church steeples,
I just want to fight for freedom

I don't want to pay for planes,
Dropping napalm causing lots of pain,
I don't want to join the army,
So mothers and children will scream
Please. Don't harm me,
I just want to fight for freedom

Don't want to squeeze the poor for taxes,
Building factories making battle axes,
Or draft a million blacks,
To keep them off the white folks backs,
I just want to fight for freedom

I won’t build factories making poison gasses
To suffocate the helpless masses,
I don’t want a shock and awe attack,
I don’t want to occupy Iraq,
I just want to fight for freedom.

I don’t want to steal their oil,
Forcing them to sweat and toil,
Making profits for our corporations,
In multi-national operations,
I just want to fight for freedom.

Just want to talk to my sister and brother,
Learn how to love one another,
Just want to clean the air,
And make sure everything is really fair,
Just want to do some good,
Creating some more brotherhood,
Yes, that's how, that’s how  I want to fight
for freedom.

Freedom  freedom,
I want and need a whole lot more,
Don't ask me what I'll use it for,
Freedom from the church and State,
Freedom from prejudice and hate,
Freedom from unspoken rules,
Freedom from the schools and fools,
That's why, that’s why, I want to fight for
freedom.
